How each one works
Direct thermal printers (most NIIMBOT B- and D-series models) have no ink at all. The label paper is heat-sensitive; the print head darkens it where it touches. Simple, cheap, nothing to replace but the roll.
Thermal transfer printers (NIIMBOT M2, M3, N1) use a ribbon. The head melts pigment from the ribbon onto the label — usually a synthetic PET material.

Why it matters for drives
Hard drives run warm, sit in bags, get stacked on top of NAS boxes and live near windows. Heat is exactly what darkens — and eventually greys out — direct-thermal paper. For a working drive that you relabel when it is repurposed, that is fine. For a drive that holds a finished project and goes on the archive shelf for five years, a faded QR is a drive you have to plug in again to identify.
Our rule
- Working drives (current projects, proxies, on-set media): direct thermal, e.g. B21.
- Archive drives (finished projects, backups, client deliveries): thermal transfer, e.g. M2 with PET labels.
